What are the Differences Between Wind and Solar Energy Sources and the Present “Electrical Grid”?

In 2008, when oil prices were extremely high and the world was struggling with a serious energy crisis, many people thought that the only solution was to cut back on our energy use and rely more on renewable energy sources. Although oil prices have since decreased, the need for clean, renewable energy sources has not diminished, especially since we have since realised the serious impact that the burning of fossil fuels has on our planet.

Renewable energy sources include the sun, wind, waves and water. All of these provide us with free energy that we can use to power our homes and businesses. However, since these are all naturally occurring phenomena, it can be difficult to harness their energy.

Fortunately, modern technology has paved the way for us to do this and today, we can use various forms of renewable energy to generate electricity. Some forms of renewable energy, such as the sun and wind, are widely available and can be used to create electricity regardless of where we are located. Water, on the other hand, is more difficult to source and is only available in certain areas. For this reason, many people have turned to systems that harness the power of the wind.

The Differences In Physics

When you think about it, wind and solar energy are two very different forms of energy. Wind is the movement of air and solar is the radiation from the sun. While these are both forms of energy, they are generated in very different ways. One of the most obvious differences is in their respective sources of energy; the wind is always available and is free, while the energy from the sun depends on many factors, the most obvious of which is the weather. Nevertheless, we must realise that there are significant differences in the way that these two forms of energy interact with our environment. Where do we stand in terms of climate change? Are we doing enough to reduce our carbon footprint and how can we make better use of these two renewable energy sources?

The wind works as a funnel to harness energy from the air while the sun’s energy is collected through solar panels or photovoltaic cells. In both cases, the goal is to generate electricity, but in the case of wind energy, this is normally done using natural resources, such as windmills or waterwheels. These mills were originally designed to grind grain and create power, so they consist of large vertical planes connected to a turbine which is built on a tall base. The vertical planes are connected to each other and to the top of the base using chains or wire cables, which act as the transmission medium of the energy source. This makes them very susceptible to corrosion and the elements, especially if they are not protected, which is why they need to be regularly maintained.

The sun also works as a source of energy, however, it requires solar panels that are specifically made to absorb the radiation from the sun. These solar panels are normally constructed per the shape of a pyramid, with the narrow end facing the sun. One of the benefits of the solar panel is that it is thinner than traditional power generating devices, so it can be placed on top of a structure with no detrimental effect on its structural integrity. Although traditional power plants generate electricity using water and steam turbines, solar panels harness the energy of the sun more efficiently than any other device and have the advantage of being more environmentally friendly.

Managing Wind And Solar Energy

Managing wind and solar energy is quite different to managing conventional energy sources. As we have established, the wind is always available and does not require any special treatment to be activated, while solar energy is dependent on many circumstances, such as the weather and time of day. This makes it more difficult to determine whether or not we can rely on this energy source to meet our needs at a particular time. The truth is that we do not always have access to these renewable energy sources when we need them and this is where the importance of alternative energy sources such as hydraulic power and microhydroelectric plants comes in. These two forms of energy are used to provide power when the sun doesn’t shine or the wind doesn’t blow for whatever reason. This is why alternative energy sources are so important – they give us flexibility in providing power when and where we need it.

Cooperation Between Nations

One of the most important differences between wind energy and solar energy is that the former is a form of energy that can and often is generated nationally while the latter is inherently more cooperative in nature – the benefits of which we all use and appreciate.

Nations have a responsibility to look after their own people and their own environment and if global warming is to be avoided, then every country needs to take a leading role in reducing their carbon footprint.

Reducing our carbon footprint means limiting our energy usage and switching to cleaner energy sources and more efficient ways of generating electricity. This means that we need to change the structure of our electricity generation industry and move away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources. The wind and the sun are forms of renewable energy that can be used to power our world, but only if we work together to manage and reduce our carbon footprint.
