Which Energy Conversion Occurs When a Solar Cell is Used to Light a Street Lamp?


When solar cells are used to light a street lamp, a portion of the energy from the Sun is converted to electrical energy through a process known as photovoltaic conversion (PV). This electrical energy is then used to illuminate the lamp and any objects near it. The process of converting light energy into electrical energy is called photovoltaic conversion (PV).

When these solar cells are placed in water or chemicals, a portion of the chemical energy from the water or chemicals will be converted to electrical energy through a process known as chemical conversion (Chemical CV). This means that a solar cell can both light and charge devices simultaneously.

Photo-reactive solar cells can be more efficient than standard solar cells at producing electricity because they can capture more of the solar light and convert it to electricity. However, these solar cells also require more energy to charge and operate due to their higher efficiency.
