What Is Solar Energy and How Can It Benefit You?

Solar energy is the ability of the Sun to produce light and heat energy. Essentially, solar energy is similar to the heat generated by the Sun. However, this energy is accessible and can be used for a variety of purposes.

There are four main advantages that solar energy has over traditional energy sources:

  • It is available whenever nature chooses to provide it. There is no need to wait for the Sun to rise or set to take advantage of it. However, in some parts of the world, especially Sub-Saharan Africa, the majority of the energy needs are not met by the Sun alone. In these parts of the world, other sources of energy must be deployed to make up for the deficit. This can be costly and inefficient.
  • It does not rely on fossil fuels, which are a major contributing factor to climate change. Therefore, it is considered to be “carbon neutral” (i.e. it does not generate any carbon dioxide and thus does not contribute to climate change).
  • It is a renewable resource, meaning that it can be replenished by nature. However, it takes a while for nature to regenerate the quantity of energy that it provides each year. For this reason, some people have invented ways of harvesting this energy more rapidly. These inventions are sometimes called “solar panels” or “solar thermal energy systems”.
  • Finally, solar energy does not cause any harm to the environment. Indeed, it is often considered to be a “clean energy” source. There are various initiatives today that focus on the reduction of environmental pollutants, particularly climate change causing gases (e.g. CO2, methane, etc.). Therefore, utilizing solar energy represents an advantage in that it does not contribute to the creation of these pollutants.

The above advantages make solar energy a suitable choice for individuals or businesses that want to address their energy needs or reduce their ecological footprint. This article will describe the various forms of solar energy and how they can be used to provide sustainable power to homes and businesses.

Types Of Solar Energy

There are four types of solar energy:

  • Direct solar energy (DSE) – This is the type of solar energy that is generated when the Sun directly interacts with a material. For instance, when the Sun shines on a piece of solar tracking material (e.g. a heliostat or a pinwheel solar dish), it heats up and turns a turbine or a generator. This type of solar energy is the most common because it is easy to use and requires little to no maintenance. However, if this system gets too dirty, it may not perform as well as new. For this reason, it is recommended to clean it regularly (e.g. with soapy water or a brush and some mild soap).
  • Reflected solar energy (RSE) – This type of solar energy is created when the Sun shines on a surface (e.g. a mirror) and is then redirected towards a material or a space (e.g. a building). It is important to note that this surface does not have to be made of metal or glass – even a simple mirror will suffice. For example, a portion of the Sun’s rays will be reflected by the surface of the water, causing it to heat up and turn a turbine or a generator. This type of solar energy has been around for centuries and still remains an efficient and effective source of energy. It is also one of the most popular solar energy options because it is easy to install and requires little to no maintenance.
  • Thermal solar energy (TSE) – This type of solar energy is created when the Sun heats up a material or a space. Unlike the previous types of solar energy which require the presence of a material or surface to create electricity, thermal solar energy works regardless of whether or not there is a material or surface present. For instance, the interior of a building can be made into a giant solar cell and heat can then be utilized to generate electricity. Another example of thermal solar energy is a furnace located in a house that heats up air which is then circulated through the home. The above example only gives an indication of how thermal solar energy can be used. It is a common misconception that thermal solar energy only produces hot air. In reality, it can produce a variety of temperatures depending on the specifics of the design of the furnace that is being used. It is important to note that thermal solar energy can also be collected and stored using conventional methods (e.g. tanks or other types of containers).
  • Photoelectricity (PEC) – This type of solar energy is generated when light shines on a material or a space and is then concentrated onto a surface using a lens or similar methods. This surface can then be used to generate electricity. This type of solar energy does not require the presence of a material or light-absorbing surface to operate. It can be generated at any time of day or night, as long as there is sufficient light (e.g. sunshine). It is, therefore, one of the more versatile types of solar energy. However, it is also one of the more expensive ones. The cost of installing and maintaining a photoelectricity system can be quite high. This type of system is usually located in power plants and large companies. It is also possible to locate these systems in the home or office (e.g. at the end of a dock to power a boat or at the end of a long driveway to provide power to a car).

The above types of solar energy differ from each other in many ways. For example, direct solar energy is typically cheaper than the other types, requires less maintenance, and is more reliable. However, it must be pointed out that not all cheap electricity is created equal. This type of electricity is often times produced by companies that purchase electricity from dirty and wasteful sources (e.g. coal-fired power plants). These types of companies often have poor business practices and are generally concerned with making a profit at any cost. For this reason, one must always do a little bit of research before purchasing any electricity, whether it is from the grid or from a solar energy system.

Uses For Solar Energy

Once we know what type of solar energy we have, we can move on to describing its various applications. The most basic application of solar energy is to produce electricity, which can then be used to power devices such as light bulbs, small appliances, etc.
