HOW DO YOU BREAK OUT OF THE WILDERNESS RESERVCIR?
Here are two ways. Did you think of these?
THE ANIMALS GO TO WHERE THE HUMANS ARE.
Influenza travels with migrating ducks and other birds.
Plague traveled with rats that stow on board ships.
Ebola came to the U.S. in research lab monkeys.
THE HUMANS COME TO WHERE THE ANIMALS ARE.
People are at risk for hantaviruses and other
hemorrhagic fevers if they visit places where
rodents have been living. People travel
to the tropics, which puts them at risk for
malaria and other tropical diseases.
Normally diseases have evolved to survive
in one particular species. Some diseases, however,
can infect more than one species...
and others readily generate different strains,
one of which may be able to jump into
a new host species.
Congratulations! You have successfully passed
the first barrier, and entered the human population.
Now you reach the second barrier:
how do you get from human to human?
Jot down some ideas, then continue.
