The Footprint Island Simulation Our Thoughts

Ken thinks the challenge is to avoid taking resources if it threatens your community.Ken Eklund

We talked about the idea of community, because the idea of community usually came up when we were talking to people. Like at Costco, or the Co-op, or the water treatment plant - what the community was, and what it was supposed to do for its members, etcetera.

And in the end, I think that was the biggest struggle that you've had here on Footprint Island. And, certainly, the biggest threat towards continued existence on the island was whether you were going to be a community or not. Because if you're just going to be individuals, essentially acting on your own, then, you know, the community just doesn't seem able to pull together. And time was going to be spent in conflict, and in doing things separately which could be more efficiently done together.

And that's the point. As groups of people become more disassociated, linearly, energy consumption goes up, exponentially. I mean that's not a rule, that's not tested... You're not asking me for data, are you? Because I don't have any.

But if there's some measure of disassociation for every society that we have on the globe, and if you measure how much energy they use, I'll bet you there's a really strong relationship.
