Jeremy said, You also need a lot of energy--to make fertilizers and pesticides for crops, feed and drugs for anmials...what else?Jeremy Littell

Jeff and Aria said, Fuel to drive the tractors. And fuel to bring the food from the farm to the market.

Jeremy said, Right. Plus the energy to package and refrigerate the food. And to dook it, if it's pre-cooked. All this takes energy.Jeremy Littell

According to the book "Our Ecological Footprint,"
about a quarter of the ecological cost of our food
is made up of energy consumption and packaging.

Energy use adds to your ecological footprint.
How much it adds depends on where the energy
comes from. Fossil fuels add quite a lot, because
they produce carbon dioxide, and thus require
forest land to sequester (absorb) the CO2.

How can you reduce the amount that food
adds to your ecological footprint?
