1b: THE RESEARCH TOOLS

EVERY EXPEDITION NEEDS TOOLS and the skill to use them well. Shortly after arriving, the Expedition One team asked Vicki York, one of Montana State University's librarians, for a briefing on how to find information quickly.

The team learned that each university has its own set of physical, electronic and online resources. In the library's online learning lab, Vicki taught the team how to find the university's best information.

Finding information quickly was particularly important to the team. As Jamie put it: "We only have two days to find information and put it together into a presentation, and one of those days we're going to spend out in the field. That's not much time."

To help speed things along, each member of the team got a Personal Digital Assistant. With the PDAs, they could take notes and share their ideas instantly with others by "beaming" the information to them.
